Band Saws are a requirement for the woodworking enthusiast. In fact, if forced to choose, they will choose to have a band saw over a table saw, due to the versatility of their nature, which provides uniformity of cuts because of the evenly distributed teeth. They not only produce excellent straight cuts, but are especially designed for easily cutting irregular shapes or curves, which is almost impossible with a table saw.
There are a few factors to consider when choosing between the different band saws available. The two main types are the floor standing model and the bench top mounted type. Unless you are a professional woodworker, the bench mounted style will probably best suit your needs, taking up less room, yet still providing the quality cuts of the floor standing model. The two main features will be the depth of the cut and the throat clearance. The depth refers to the thickness of wood the saw will cut and the throat measurement is the width of wood that can be accommodated. When the description states the band saw is a 12, 14 or 18, this refers to the throat measurement. As for motor sizes, a .5 to 1 horsepower is more than suitable and variable speed is not a necessity, as slower speeds usually produce more precise results.
Band Saws
Choosing the right type of blade is important to give the best finished result. The precision blade is accurate in cutting and leaves a smooth finish. The buttress blade cuts faster when smoothness is not required and the claw tooth provides fact cuts for soft material. However, the most important thing to remember is proper set up of the band saw. Read and follow all instructions provided with the saw. Failure to do so will not only cause poor performance but increase the chance of breaking the saw blade during use. When used correctly and utilizing safety goggles and glasses, the band saw will be a very useful tool you will enjoy working with.
