Bench grinders are a versatile tool found in most workshops. Depending on your needs from light grinding to heavy duty grinding and sharpening , there are a variety of grinders out to fit your needs. The grinder is mounted on a work bench for ease of use, while a pedestal mounted grinder is mounted to the ground for larger pieces of material.
Bench grinders are also used to sharpen other tools, such as chisels, knives, and gardening equipment. They can also sharpen the ends of drill bits and other hand tools in the everyday workshop. They are great for rough grinding.
Bench Grinders
Depending on the grade of wheel, you can also create different effects. The coarse grain wheel can remove rust from metal for preparation work or grinding metal down. The fine grain wheel can be used to do finishing work. The silicon carbide wheel is used on soft metals such as copper, aluminum and cast iron. It would also be used on ceramics. The aluminum oxide wheel is used on stronger metals like alloy steel, carbon, and bronze.
Due to the speed of the spindle mounted grinding wheel, caution should be used whenever operating the grinder. Wheels designed for steel should not be used for grinding softer metal. The soft metal will get lodged in the pores of the wheel and expand with the heat of grinding. This can dislodge pieces of the grinding wheel. Also wear safety goggles whenever using the grinder. Adhere to all safety and operating manuals.
