Buffers are primarily used to make thing look brand new or close to it. You'll see machines that polish floors, cars or tools, depending on the use and its intention. Check with the maker and see if not only the pads are compatible with the machine but also if you can use oil or water for your specific application.
There are many machines on the market that polish. They can be hand held, plugged in or cordless. The hand held models, of course, can be used practically anywhere, where as the plugged in models are limited in their mobility.
Buffers
Depending on the use you can find a multitude of pads that work well with the machine. If you are looking to put a shine on something metallic like a vehicle, the softest pad is in order. There are grades of buffs just like there are grade of sandpaper, and with specific uses you can find the right application of pads for your needs.
Most buffers work well with a combination of oils or soaps depending on what you are using it on. Lubricants are especially necessary if you are using it on objects that you don't want to be scratched or marred. Sometimes a project with have a series of pads that respectively get softer as they go to make the work more refined. This is true when you are using other mediums such as sandpaper and need a smooth finish for a polish and leaving the polish for last.
