The Best Option for your Broadband Needs
If you're in the market to upgrade your internet access from dial up or choose a broadband provider for the first time, it can be confusing. With the different options available, the choice to move to a broadband one is an affordable and smart one as the internet adds more and more broadband content.
The main choices the typical consumer has are DSL, cable, and fiber optic broadband service. The three have different speeds and prices, and their level of access to you can depend on location. But, they all do offer a great boost over the connection speeds one would see with dial up service.
The least expensive broadband access available today is DSL. Telephone companies market the service and install it, but your proximity to a phone company service station affects the speed of your service. Cost wise, the service ranges from $15 to $30 per month, and is perfect for the basic internet user looking to surf the web.
Cable broadband is a little more expensive than DSL, and is run through your local cable television provider. The service can be more expensive, with packages going up from $25 per month, but the connection speeds are generally faster than DSL.
Cable broadband has the distinct advantage of being more widely available, as you can get the service so long as the cable company can also provide you television service. If you listen to online streams, play games online, or have multiple internet users in your home, a cable connection would be the way to go.
Fiber Optic technology, which has been primarily introduced by Verizon?s FIOS, is the high end of connectivity. Since Fiber Optic cables (a cable with a small piece of glass that reflects beams of light) are required, this is not available in most areas.
There is a greater bandwidth available if you can get fiber optic service, and there is some room for the service to grow to even faster speeds. The price of this service goes from $30 to well over $200, and is perfect for a household with many internet users or those that run a home based website.
Before you choose a broadband provider, establish what you want to spend and your needs for service, and then shop around with your local carriers. Also, be aware of some carriers who can save you money on multiple services if you bundle the broadband with telephone and television service.
