The Impact Of Wii Fit On The Masses

by Chris Channing

Few video games actually do more good than harm in terms of health. But for Wii Fit, the act of fixing one's health is the sole purpose of the game. Wii Fit is a recently released game for the Wii console, in which the high demand for the product is well justified when considering its benefits.

Actual health professionals will attest to the fact that there are several types of training to be worked on in obtaining a genuine workout over a long term basis. Wii Fit takes this into consideration by offering four basic types of categories to train in: strength, yoga, aerobics, and balane. Each category works to benefit mind, body, and spirit in different exercises and motions.

A Wii Balance Board is to be used with the Wii Fit system. The Wii Balance Board in itself is a work of art, as it can do all sorts of actions from calculating body mass to actually measuring one's weight. Interestingly enough, it also offers consumers the ability to measure their center of gravity, which is great for doign yoga and fun mini games that Wii Fit gives consumers access to.

The response to Wii Fit so far has been vastly overwhelming. The response can be compared to Wii Sports, which had a similar following but wasn't in lack of demand since it ships with most Wii consoles. Wii Sports quickly became the most popular Wii game, although Wii Fit might be changing that in due time. Wii Fit is sometimes regarded as an extension if Wii Sports, although it has much more functionality and substance.

Already, there have been vast reports of video gamers finally getting off the couch and losing the weight they always wanted to, but just couldn't find a good enough video game to inspire them. Since only being released at the beginning of May in 2008 in parts not including Japan, this is quite a feat indeed. Clearly, the Wii console has become much more than a way to end boredom- it is now a way to lose weight in the comfort of one's own home.

There lies but one problem in the entire equation: Wii Fit is quite hard to find. It has had such a demand for it even after a couple of months of initial release that consumers will be hard pressed to find it in local stores. The best bet as of now is going through online retailers, although it never hurts to try out local retailers to see if demand has let up any. (But don't be surprised if it hasn't!)

Final Thoughts

Wii Fit, like many Wii games before it, is reinventing the way the world plays video games. The jump to more realistic styles of playing, not to mention healthier ways of playing, is becoming more possible with innovations in technology. We can only hope that Wii games that come after Wii Fit will be as compelling, healthy to play, and beneficial to the player. The only thing to worry about is actually finding it in stock.
