A benchtop drill press is a heavy-duty tool that mounts onto a worktable or stand. It is designed for drilling precisely-spaced holes of uniform depth. Most presses are versatile, able to drill concrete, metal and wood, and include a floor that raises, lowers, and swivels to make handling odd shapes easy.
A standard benchtop drill press will offer 12-14 inches of swing, a three inch stroke depth, and a motor with one-half to three-quarters horse-power. The press will also have variable speed control in order to drill holes of varying sizes. Different models of benchtop presses include cordless, electric and pneumatic drills.
To use a benchtop drill press, align the drill over the desired location for a hole, apply pressure with a handle to mark the spot, then hold the trigger to drill. Drill presses should be operated using both hands. Long handles on the press provide more pressure, which heavy drill bits require.
For a high-quality benchtop drill press, look for small details that make the press safer and more accurate. A depth stop with a dial on the handle shaft may not be as accurate as a threaded rod depth stop that locks into place. Guiding lasers provide additional accuracy as they help to align the center of the drill bit. The power switch's location is also important; if it is on the front of the press, it is much easier to switch off if something goes wrong.
A benchtop drill press will cost around half the price of a floor model, and with attachments such as sanding drums, planar heads, mortising attachments and fences, the press can act as other tools as well. The benchtop press's smaller size makes it suitable for small or tight work spaces, and it can handle almost anything a full-size press can.
