A power drill press is helpful with wood working and metal working.
A power drill press is a device used to bore holes in metal or wood. Most power drill presses rest on the floor on a base with a vertical shaft supporting the drill head at eye level and a table or platform to place the item being drilled at waste level.
A good drill press is capable of being rotated so you can drill at an angle. More accurately, the table can be rotated. Some tables can be rotated up to 45 degrees. Standard models can only drill up and down perpendicular with the floor.
Less expensive drill presses can be placed on a work bench. Drill presses that are placed on a table cannot drill holes as deep as a floor mounted power drill press. A basic table mounted drill press can bore a hole up to two inches deep. Floor mounted models can drill holes up to six inches or more.
If you need to drill multiple holes in the exact same way or depth, a power drill press is the right tool for the job. The angle of the hole can be set and locked in. The depth of the hole is marked on a ruler, if you need to drill a half inch hole just watch the depth guide on the press and stop at a half inch. A power drill press allows for easy mass production of items. If you were going to manufacture 15 dog houses, you would not want to drill all those holes with a hand drill.
Most power drill presses can operate at different speeds. The speed is changed by moving a belt from a small pulley to a larger pulley. Different speeds are used based on the material that is being bored. Metal requires lower speeds because of the density of metal. Wood is less dense than metal so you can use a higher speed when boring through wood.
