Wheels are discs which have abrasive compounds pressed or bonded to them. We never think about the manufacturing process of these types of tools, but in this instance, it is interesting to know that these wheels have precise and tightly controlled processes. There is the safety element of a spinning disc, plus the composition and uniformity must be precise to prevent the disc from exploding because of the high stress that is produced during rotation.
Grinding Wheels
Grinding wheels can be used for delicate jewelry making, or cutting large sheets of metal. The five characteristics of a wheel are: material, grain size, wheel grade, grain spacing and bond type. The materials used are Aluminum Oxide, Silicon Carbide, Diamond or Cubic Boron Nitride. The larger the grain size, the faster the cutting, but a poor finish. The smallest is used for finishing. The wheel grade, soft to hard, effects all aspects of grinding, such as speed, coolant flow, feed rates and grinding depth. Grain spacing effects the surface finish: dense grain leaves a smoother finish, less dense cuts wider and uses less coolant. The wheel bond also affects the finish, coolant and speed of the wheel.
