For arts and crafts projects, heat guns or glue guns as they are sometimes called, are ever handy and useful. These applicators are plugged into electrical outlets and they heat much like an electric iron does. Uniform lengths of plastic are inserted by the heating element. As the plastic "glue" is used, there is room for another length of plastic to be inserted. The heat guns are shaped similarly to a small pistol with a handle and trigger. While the trigger is engaged, the barrel of the "pistol," squirts out the melted plastic in a clear, sticky liquid. This hot glue is perfect for use as an adhesive for many handmade crafts.
Certainly, this hot plastic will stick pieces together like paper, fabrics, vinyl, and some lightweight wood items. Still, even though the crafter knows that heat guns are hot, burns can quickly occur. Precautions should definitely be taken. Also, it is wise to keep in mind that the hot glue dries and hardens fairly rapidly. Then, it is almost impossible to remove completely.

Since heat guns are designed to fit easily into a hand for comfortable and flexible motion while doing gluing projects, they are very convenient. Many craft directions call for heat guns. The hot glue can stick plastic eyes on plush animals, glue a vinyl belt together around a felt Santa suit, or paste tiny silk flowers to a straw hat.
