When engineer Albert Kaufmann invented jig saws by exchanging the needle in his wife's sewing machine for a cutting blade in 1946, one can imagine she probably wasn't too thrilled; but scores of woodworkers have been ever since. Kaufmann's bright idea led Swiss company Scintilla AG (later absorbed by Bosch) to develop and manufacture jig saws just one year later, and the world of woodworking was changed forever. With its invention woodworkers were no longer constrained to making only straight cuts with power tools. A whole new world of cutting curved lines cleanly and quickly became available to them.
Jig Saws
Powered by an electric motor, the thin reciprocating saw blade moves at a high speed and can be steered at the user's discretion around almost any type of curvilinear or straight line. Blades are available for cutting a wide variety of materials including wood, plastic, cardboard, leather and even metal, including some types of thin stainless steel. It is one of the safest tools for a beginning woodworker as its blade is more enclosed than on other saw types.
From its rudimentary form jig saws have been further refined and developed making them one of the craftsman's most versatile tools. Variable speeds and orbital movement of the blade have now improved its versatility by giving the user control of the blade's cutting speed according to the material to be cut. Tool-less blade changing, better precision control systems and even 45-degree bevel cutting have helped make jig saws the fourth bestselling DIY tool on the market.
