Orbital sanders are an electric motors with round disks fitted with sandpaper. This type of sander can be used for an array of applications such as removing coated layers you wish to remove. Stripping old paint and preparing surfaces for varnishing are the most common uses. You may also use it for fine finishing work. The round pad works very well on contours in the woodwork. It does not work well on corners. Satisfactory finishes can be obtained using this tool. The sander can also be fitted with various polishing and buffing pads.
The sander with the sandpaper attached to the pad rotates either in a circular motion or back and forth to imitate types of motion that a craftsman would use when sanding by hand. Movement in any direction is less than one quarter inch.
Orbital Sanders
The orbital sander, depending on the model, usually operates around 1,500 - 4,000 orbits per minute. The higher orbits per minute (opm), the faster stock is removed.
Sandpaper should be replaced more often if you find swirls in your work. Do not press down too hard to try and get more work from a dull sheet of sandpaper. Also, do not skip sandpaper grits. Cleaning the surface you are working on between grits can prevent swirls. Previous sanding of dust and ground grit can get trapped under the sanding pad and leave small marks on the surface. By allowing the sander to move more slowly and softer can smooth out the scallop marks.
