Power lathes are a machines that spins the raw materials so the user can perform various tasks such as sanding, drilling, or cutting evenly around the axis of rotation.
Lathes are used in many types of artisan crafts such as woodturning, metal working, and glassworking. Perhaps the popular of the power lathes is the potter's wheel. It turns the clay in a circle so the artist can shape it in a circular fashion. Lathes can also be used to plane a surface or screw threads. Lathes can also be ornamental to produce three dimensional pieces with great detail. Materials can be spun with either one or two centers. One of these centers can be moved horizontally to accommodate a variety of lengths of materials. Other lathes use a chuck to hold the material in place to spin on the axis of rotation.

Because lathes can be used for a myriad of different materials, they are used to make many different products. Lathes for wood can be used to make candlestick holders, cue sticks, baseball bats, or cue sticks to name just a few. As mentioned, a power lathe is used in pottery to make bowls and other round objects. Metal lathes can be used to make automobile parts such as camshafts or crankshafts. Lathes can be used to make an object round or to add decorations such as in the case of chair legs or fence posts.
