Table Saws are circular blades mounted on a table-like platform that cuts into the wood as it is moved against the blade. There are different types of table saws: Benchtop saws, which are light in weight and operate from a table-like support. Contractor saws, which are heavy and come attached to a base and usually able to be wheeled around. Cabinet saws, which comes with a cabinet base and offers the most accuracy combined with the least amount of vibration and Hybrid saws which are like a contractor saw in that it can usually be moved around, but also like a cabinet saw because it includes a cabinet for better dust control.
Prices range from under $200 to over $3,000. The higher the price will give you a more powerful saw and longer lasting motor. Accuracy also comes with a higher price tag, but durability and included safety features are often what sells the most saws.
Table Saws
Before choosing which saw would work the best for you, consider the space and electrical power you have available. Most cabinet saws are stationary and need plenty of space all around it, the hybrid and contractor saws that can be wheeled don't require as much room since it can be moved and the benchtop can usually be hung up on a wall. Heavy-duty cabinet saw motors run only on 240-volts while most of the hybrid and contractor saws can run on either 120- or 240-volts. Benchtop uses 120-volt so it's useful around the house.
