A vintage plane is a hand tool that is used to smooth, thin, and flatten wood. These tools have an iron chisel that is held in place to ensure that shavings are removed evenly. They are still used to this day.
Removing the wood is accomplished by the bottom of the plane being completely flat while the chisel is a little lower. The user applies pressure to the knob which is located on the front of the plane and pushes by using the handle at the rear. Long, smooth strokes are needed to ensure that there are no nicks in the wood.

Vintage planes come in many different sizes and are used for different purposes. Large planes are used when there is a great amount of wood that needs to be removed while small planes are used for edges and molding.
